website and internet security             how I create websites

Most websites have simple security requirements and inexpensive hosting will meet the security needs for such websites.

Websites which do not include applications and websites which do not manage sensitive or private information do not require additional security.

Even a website which includes a system for buying items can avoid the need for additional security by linking all purchases to a third party like PayPal which handle all sensitive information such as credit or debit card transactions.

A script on your website will handle the transaction and notifications to you, e.g. by email, on your website in a way that does not require additional security for your website. All customer information can be handled by the third party site.

If you are planning a website which must manage private or sensitive information, your website will require additional security. I can help you plan a cost effective security strategy for your website.

Options for higher levels of website and website information security include

  • establishing or renting a VPN (Virtual Private Network)
  • establishing or renting a virtual machine on a shared server
  • establishing or renting a dedicated machine to which only you and those you authorize will have access
  • using your own machine as a web server for the website, e.g.
    • if only you or a few selected individuals need access
    • and you need access from many locations, devices, etc.
  • etc.
  • there are many commercial options and the accelerating adoption of cloud technologies makes some these choices highly competitive, and increasingly affordable, commodities
    • cloud computing – the use of computing resources (hardware and software) that are delivered as a service over a network (typically the Internet); see source Wikipedia ‑ cloud computing for more detail.
